Daan De Vlieger - Joint PhD VUB (100%)

Hello everyone, my name is Daan De Vlieger and I recently started my PhD trajectory after obtaining my FWO grant. My main institution is the VUB, but it is a joint PhD with the Ghent University, so you will regularly see me walking around the corridors here. After five years of studying Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy at Ghent University, this way I remain a UGent member! Last academic year, I decided to study an additional master's degree in neurological rehabilitation in Leuven. After six fun and interesting years, I will spend the next four years studying muscle changes of two lower limb muscles in stroke patients in the first three months after their stroke. Very much looking forward to starting this project. Feel free to speak to me and we will talk further over a good coffee. See you soon!

Pauline Devolder - PhD scholarship (100%)

My name is Pauline Devolder and I have been working on my PhD in audiology under prof. Sarah Verhulst (Department of Information Technology) and prof. Hannah Keppler for about a year now. After my master's thesis on cochlear synaptopathy and speech understanding in ageing, I am now focusing on auditory neural processing in patients with tinnitus and hyperacusis.
In daily life, I enjoy going for walks or swimming and volunteer for people with intellectual disabilities. As a former leader with the KSA, I still regularly return to my hometown of Torhout on weekends.

Renan Resende - Foreign guest researcher

I graduated in Physical Therapy at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, in 2008. I also did my masters (2011) and PhD (2014) degrees in Rehabilitation Sciences at UFMG, with a one year PhD sandwich at Queen’s University, Canada. Currently, I am an Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Therapy at UFMG, where I also work as a masters and PhD supervisor at the Rehabilitation Sciences Graduate Program. I am engaged as a Ghent University as a Visiting Researcher at Ghent University, under the mentorship of prof. Erik Witvrouw. My research during the one-year period will focus on determining whether training load, sleep quality, fatigue, stress and delayed-onset muscle soreness are predictive of injury occurrence in parathletes.

Cato Van De Looverboch - PhD scholarship (100%)

I am Cato Van De Looverbosch and I will start as a PhD student at the end of November. For this research project, I will focus on muscle metabolism in individuals with type 2 diabetes and sensorimotor polyneuropathy at the Rehabilitation in Chronic Internal Disorders research group. I have a background in veterinary medicine, having completed my master's degree in veterinary medicine at Ghent University in 2022. Last year I was working as a companion animal veterinarian in a group practice, but now I am eager to make the switch to scientific research. I am therefore looking forward to being able to contribute to the knowledge about the condition and well-being of patients through my research.
In my spare time, I enjoy being creative with music, photography and painting. In addition, you can regularly find me among the horses and in the beautiful city of Ghent.
